Groom's Wedding Checklist: Indian Wedding Outfit Planning Timeline

Planning a groom's outfit for an Indian wedding involves far more than choosing a sherwani. With multiple events, accessories to coordinate, and tailoring timelines to manage, starting early is essential. This month-by-month checklist, drawn from our experience dressing thousands of grooms at Venisons over the past four decades, will ensure you are perfectly prepared for every moment of your wedding celebrations.

6 Months Before the Wedding

Begin Your Research

  • Gather inspiration: Save images of sherwanis, bandhgala suits, and outfits that appeal to you. Instagram, Pinterest, and Bollywood films are all good starting points.
  • Decide on a style direction: Do you want a traditional sherwani, a modern Indo-Western look, or something in between? Having a general direction will make shopping more focused.
  • Discuss with your partner: Coordinate with the bride on colour themes and overall aesthetic. Many couples choose complementary colours and embroidery styles.
  • Set your budget: Determine how much you want to spend on your complete outfit, including accessories and alterations. Bespoke sherwanis typically range from several hundred to several thousand pounds, depending on fabric and embroidery.

Start Visiting Shops

  • Visit specialist retailers like Venisons on Ealing Road, Wembley, to see collections in person. Nothing replaces feeling fabrics and trying on different styles.
  • Do not buy on your first visit. Use early trips to understand what suits you and what is available within your budget.

4 to 5 Months Before the Wedding

Make Your Sherwani Decision

  • Select your main ceremony outfit: Choose your sherwani or bandhgala for the wedding ceremony. If opting for bespoke, this is the latest you should place your order to allow time for construction and fittings.
  • Choose the fabric: Finalise the fabric, colour, and embroidery style. Bring a swatch of the bride's outfit if possible for colour matching.
  • Book your first fitting: For bespoke orders, schedule the initial measurement appointment. Bring the shoes you plan to wear, as heel height affects trouser length.

Plan Outfits for Other Events

An Indian wedding involves multiple events, and each requires a different outfit:

  • Engagement/ring ceremony: A formal kurta with a Nehru jacket or a bandhgala suit.
  • Mehndi: A bright, embellished kurta with churidar.
  • Sangeet: A stylish kurta or Indo-Western outfit that allows you to dance comfortably.
  • Reception: A second sherwani, bandhgala suit, or a tailored Western suit with Indian accessories.

3 Months Before the Wedding

Fittings and Accessories

  • First fitting for bespoke orders: Try on the partially constructed garment and provide feedback on fit and comfort.
  • Order your turban (safa/pagri): Turban tying is a skill, and you should decide early whether you will tie it yourself, have a family member do it, or hire a professional turban stylist.
  • Select your footwear: Choose mojari, khussa, or formal shoes for each event. Break them in by wearing them around the house for short periods.
  • Choose a stole (dupatta): Select a stole that complements your sherwani in colour and fabric.

2 Months Before the Wedding

Finalise Everything

  • Second fitting for bespoke orders: The garment should be nearly complete. Check all details: buttons, embroidery, lining, and length.
  • Accessorise: Finalise all accessories including turban pin or brooch (kalgi), cufflinks, and any ceremonial items such as a decorative sword.
  • Coordinate with the wedding party: If groomsmen, brothers, or your father are wearing coordinated outfits, ensure their pieces are also on track.
  • Grooming plan: Book any grooming appointments (haircut, beard trim) and schedule them for a week before the wedding, not the day before.

1 Month Before the Wedding

Final Checks

  • Final fitting: Try on every outfit with all accessories to ensure everything works together.
  • Weight management: If your weight fluctuates, try to maintain your current weight from this point forward. Even a few pounds of change can affect the fit of a tailored sherwani.
  • Organise outfits by event: Lay out each outfit with its accessories so you know exactly what goes with what. Take photographs for reference.
  • Steam or press: Have all garments professionally pressed or steamed. Do not iron embroidered pieces at home, as this can damage the work.

1 Week Before the Wedding

Final Preparations

  • Pack outfits carefully: If travelling, pack each outfit in a garment bag with tissue paper between folds to prevent creasing.
  • Break in shoes: If you have not already, wear your wedding shoes around the house for an hour each evening.
  • Confirm turban arrangements: If using a professional turban stylist, confirm the booking and timing.
  • Delegate: Ask a trusted groomsman or family member to be responsible for your outfit changes on the day, ensuring each outfit and its accessories are ready when needed.

On the Wedding Day

  • Allow plenty of time for dressing. A full sherwani outfit with turban takes longer than you think.
  • Wear a plain white vest or undershirt beneath your sherwani to protect the fabric from perspiration.
  • Keep a small emergency kit nearby: safety pins, a needle and thread in your outfit's colour, and stain remover wipes.
  • Have someone take a full-length photograph before the ceremony so you can check that everything is in place.
